Colleague's Wife Dies After Fired Man Visits Home
A Colorado man was sentenced to 42 years in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder for killing a former colleague's wife. The incident occurred following his dismissal from work.
Details of the Incident
Ernest Cunningham, 53, went to the Denver apartment of his former coworker on June 29, 2024. Instead of encountering his intended target, he shot Kelsey Roberts-Gariety when she opened the door.
Kelsey's husband reported that Cunningham had issues with him and had been making threats after losing his job. The husband's claims included allegations of Cunningham's drug use at work prior to being fired.
Investigation and Sentencing
Witnesses in the apartment complex reported hearing a gunshot and seeing someone flee the scene. A video recording by another resident showed Cunningham leaving in his car, which helped police connect him to the murder.
Cunningham, who was on parole for a burglary conviction at the time, was arrested shortly after. He was sentenced in February 2025 to 42 years in prison.
Family's Response
Kelsey's sister, Kylie Al-Nubu’at, expressed her feelings about the sentence, stating that while their family serves a life sentence of grief, justice feels served with Cunningham's imprisonment.
Reflecting on her sister's death, Al-Nubu’at noted it has changed how she values family connections and relationships. She emphasized the importance of staying connected with loved ones regularly.
