Is John Fetterman Really Considering a Party Switch? New

Is John Fetterman Really Considering a Party Switch?

Sen. John Fetterman has been a Democrat all his adult life, and he continues to mostly vote along party lines. There are, however, a few issues on which he has voted with Republicans.Fetterman’s emerging independent streak on the political stage is raising eyebrows among his Senate colleagues and giving fodder to his progressive critics, sparking speculation about whether he might exit the Democratic Party.Last week, Fetterman said he would formally change his affiliation if opposition to Israel becomes an official part of the Democratic Party’s platform. It is the first time the Pennsylvania senator has laid out a scenario under which he would leave.Advertisement Fetterman’s colleagues are skeptical he can win a Democratic primary. One Democratic senator, who asked to speak on background so he could be candid, said he was worried about Fetterman making a surprise party switch.“I am concerned,” the senator told NOTUS.Fetterman has pointed to recent contested primaries as evidence that the party is changing.“Look at the kinds of people that are winning our primaries. Not just, ‘I’m pro-Palestinian,’ but, ‘I’m intensely anti-Israel.’ That’s a significant difference,” Fetterman told NOTUS.Fetterman’s decision to create a joint fundraising committee with Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, his Pennsylvania colleague with whom he has a uniquely close bipartisan friendship, is also sparking questions.Joint fundraising committees are a common way to bulk up one’s coffers, but it’s highly unusual for participants to be from different political parties, a move that didn’t go unnoticed by his Senate colleagues.“I’ve never seen it before. Yes, I’m struck by it,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Maryland), who served as chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told NOTUS.Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-Pennsylvania), a progressive who has left the door open to a potential challenge to Fetterman once his term expires in 2028, called Fetterman’s decision to team up with McCormick on fundraising “crazy stuff.”“We have battleground races in Pennsylvania that we are trying to flip, and now we’ve got John Fetterman helping the Republicans to raise money to beat Democrats,” Deluzio told MeidasTouch last week.Fetterman downplayed the joint fundraising committee with McCormick, telling the Washington Examiner, “It’s nothing sinister.”“It’s just — people have joint interest in the things that we happen to agree on, if we both represent Pennsylvania,” he told the outlet.Fetterman has become more and more estranged from the Democratic Party. He votes with Democrats on most bills and nominations, but his backing of Israel, the Iran war and border security has annoyed some in his party. He enjoys attacking Democrats, most recently criticizing progressives for backing Platner in Maine’s Senate race.Fetterman said last month he regretted calling for the elimination of the filibuster during his 2022 run for Senate and praised former Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema for maintaining the Senate’s traditional supermajority rule in President Joe Biden’s era.“If we lose the filibuster, then the rights of the minority, whether that will be Democrat or Republican minority, would have effectively little to no voice,” Fetterman said in an interview with conservative podcast host Katie Miller, the wife of White House adviser Stephen Miller.“And if we become a smaller version of the House, that would have profound ramifications for the United States, and that would be dangerous. I’ll be the first to say that our entire Democratic Party was wrong about that in that cycle.”Asked if Fetterman thought he could win a Democratic primary, Fetterman said, “I guess we’ll see.”Fetterman hasn’t announced whether he will seek another term.Adam Jentleson, Fetterman’s former chief of staff and founder of the Searchlight Institute, a Democratic think tank, said he believed the senator might leave the party “in order to stay relevant,” particularly in a scenario where Democrats win a Senate majority by a single seat in November.“I think, if he is the majority-maker, he will flip, because it would give him a massive amount of attention,” Jentleson, who last year expressed concerns about his former boss’ mental health, said in an interview with NOTUS.This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.

Teen Charged in Chilling Baltimore Sibling Murders Sparks Widespread Outrage New

Teen Charged in Chilling Baltimore Sibling Murders Sparks Widespread Outrage

A teenager was arrested Wednesday in connection with the fatal shooting of siblings inside their home in a suburb of Baltimore County.Keith Maurice James Jr., 16, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of use of a firearm in a crime of violence as an adult in the July 7 shooting deaths of 9-year-old Steve Allen and his 15-year-old sister, Giovanna Myrie, inside their Gwynn Oak house, police said. The children's mother found them dead and called 9-1-1, according to the criminal complaint.Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said Wednesday investigators discovered that James was inside the house previously, and the criminal complaint alleges the suspect was hanging out with Myrie inside the house with a gun in the days leading up to the killings.Baltimore County police announce they have made an arrest in a shooting that killed two siblings in Gwynn Oak.WMAR"When you consider how horrific this crime was carried out, it was terrible. When you reflect on the fact that a child who had just turned 16 carried out this crime and did it in the manner he did, it's troubling," McCullough told reporters at a news conference.Investigators said they spoke with witnesses and used cell phone and surveillance footage to identify James as the suspect.A friend of Myrie told police that allegedly the 15-year-old victim had begun having video chats with a boy named "Keith" a few weeks before the shooting, the criminal complaint said.McCullough could not give specifics about the nature of the alleged relationship between Giovanna and the suspect.Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough says the suspect was known to the victims. He has been charged as an adult.WMAR"We need to make sure we know who our kids are associating with. The final issue is dating violence, teen violence between people who have relationships. We need to be mindful of those things," he told reporters.Popular ReadsThe unidentified friend said that "Keith" visited Myrie's house on July Fourth, according to investigators. During that visit, Myrie video-called the friend, who saw "Keith" allegedly with her in her bed with a handgun in his hand, the criminal complaint said.Myrie allegedly texted the friend and claimed the boy threatened to kill her if she "messed around with any other guys," the criminal complaint said. Investigators allegedly found text messages on Myrie's tablet from James that echoed the threat, according to the complaint. Investigators allege that James' cell phone location data pinged him close to the house around the time the murders took place.Baltimore County police announce they have made an arrest in a shooting that killed two siblings in Gwynn Oak.WMARPolice also allege that surveillance footage showed James take a bus to the house before the killings and leave the scene on a bus."It took longer than I wanted it to; however, we had to make sure that we put together a very airtight case considering the age of the suspect in this case," McCullough said.James is currently being held in jail without bail. Attorney information wasn't immediately available.

Supreme Court's Unanimous Decision Gives Trump Administration a Major Win New

Supreme Court's Unanimous Decision Gives Trump Administration a Major Win

The Supreme Court of the United States handed the Trump administration a legal victory this week by throwing out a federal appeals court ruling that had revived a dispute over public speaking restrictions for immigration judges. In an unsigned order, the justices reversed a decision of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. They reinstated a lower-court ruling dismissing a lawsuit filed by the National Association of Immigration Judges. The case centered on a Justice Department policy requiring immigration judges to obtain approval before participating in certain public speaking engagements deemed “official” in nature.Advertisement The policy requires immigration judges to obtain approval before participating in “official” speaking engagements, including presentations at immigration conferences or pro bono legal training events.According to court records, judges are still permitted to give speeches in a personal capacity so long as the topics are not directly connected to immigration matters. The National Association of Immigration Judges challenged the policy in federal court in Alexandria, arguing it violated the First Amendment by restricting judges from expressing private opinions about immigration policy or the agency employing them. But U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema, a Clinton appointee serving the Eastern District of Virginia, dismissed the lawsuit, pointing to the Civil Service Reform Act.The law directs many disputes involving federal employees through administrative review channels such as the Office of Special Counsel and the Merit Systems Protection Board rather than federal district courts.Brinkema concluded that Congress intended claims like those brought by the judges’ association to be handled through that specialized review system instead of traditional lawsuits in federal court. The 4th Circuit later revived the lawsuit and sent it back to the district court, raising concerns about whether the review framework created under the Civil Service Reform Act is actually operating the way Congress intended. The appeals court pointed to two major issues.First, the Merit Systems Protection Board at one point lacked enough members to function, creating a backlog that critics argued undermined the effectiveness of the system.Second, the court noted the Trump administration’s constitutional position that the president has the authority to remove members of the MSPB and the Office of Special Counsel at will, a stance that raised broader questions about the independence of the federal employee oversight process. The administration returned to the Supreme Court calling the case a “clear candidate for summary reversal,” arguing the 4th Circuit relied on a theory the parties had not raised. The high court agreed.“Federal courts are not ‘roving commissions licensed to ‘sally forth each day looking for wrongs to right.’ The Court of Appeals lost sight of those principles here,” said the unanimous, unsigned order.Justice Clarence Thomas, joined by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, wrote that the 4th Circuit was also wrong regarding the legal issues involved. The justices also dismissed, without comment, a cross-petition from the judges’ association asking the court to consider whether federal employees can directly bring pre-enforcement speech challenges in district court.Several closely watched cases involving gun rights and immigration policy remain pending before the U.S. Supreme Court as the justices enter the final stretch of their current term, which is expected to conclude by July. The high court still has more than 20 decisions left to issue, including rulings that could have major implications for Second Amendment protections and key elements of the Trump administration’s immigration agenda. Both issues have emerged as major legal and political battlegrounds. States across the country continue to debate and enact gun-control measures that face constitutional challenges, while the administration’s efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement have generated a wave of litigation that is now making its way through the federal courts. One of the most closely watched Second Amendment cases still awaiting a decision is Wolford v. Lopez, which the Supreme Court heard in January. This article may contain commentary which reflects the author's opinion.
