Keanu Reeves Pleads for Director's Mercy in Netflix Fraud Case Twist
Keanu Reeves has defended director Carl Rinsch, with whom he worked on the film "47 Ronin," amidst Rinsch's legal challenges. Reeves penned a letter of support prior to Rinsch's sentencing for fraud.
Reeves Shows Support
The actor expressed that while he was unaware of the specific details of Rinsch's case, he wanted to advocate for leniency, based on his own experiences with the director over the years.
Fraud Charges and Conviction
Carl Rinsch was arrested in West Hollywood in March last year on charges including wire fraud and money laundering. He was accused of deceiving Netflix by misusing funds meant for a series project called "White Horse." He was convicted in December.
"White Horse" Production Issues
According to prosecutors, Netflix invested $44 million into the sci-fi show between 2018 and 2019 and an additional $11 million later. These funds were reportedly diverted to personal accounts rather than being used for production.
Rinsch allegedly squandered a significant portion of these funds through risky investments and failed to inform Netflix about these losses. Instead, he misled them about production progress.
Reeves acknowledged in his letter that he does not intend to excuse Rinsch's actions but emphasized the positive impact Rinsch had on his peers as an artist.
Carl Rinsch is scheduled for sentencing on June 29.
