Mike Tomlin's Unexpected Career Move After Leaving Steelers
Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has quickly transitioned to a new role, joining NBC as the lead studio analyst for its Football Night in America pregame show.
New Position at NBC
Tomlin, 54, was reported by The Athletic on April 21 to be stepping into the broadcasting arena shortly after resigning from his position with the Steelers. He spent 19 seasons with the franchise and left following the 2025-26 season.
NBC is currently reorganizing its studio team lineup after dismissing Tony Dungy. The network is also determining future roles for analysts Rodney Harrison, Jac Collinsworth, and Chris Simms.
Looking Ahead
Though it wasn’t explicitly stated that Tomlin wanted a TV role, Steelers owner Art Rooney II mentioned earlier this year that Tomlin planned to take a break from coaching. Rooney noted that Tomlin intends to spend more time with family and pursue opportunities outside of coaching.
At his resignation, Tomlin expressed gratitude towards the Steelers organization and excitement for the future, despite not providing specific details about his next career move.
Pittsburgh Legacy
During his tenure starting in 2007, Tomlin led the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory in his second season. Although they returned to the Super Bowl in 2010, they did not win again. Despite ongoing playoff appearances, his departure was emotional for many within the team. Notably, quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed deep admiration for Tomlin's impact on the team’s culture and success over nearly two decades.
