Mayte Garcia Reveals the Moment She Learned of Prince's Tragic Overdose
On the 10th anniversary of Prince's death, his ex-wife Mayte Garcia shared her feelings about the legendary musician's passing. She discussed her personal experience upon learning of his overdose and the deep sorrow she felt.
Discovering Prince's Passing
Garcia recalled April 21 as a "horrible day," explaining how she was driving when she received the news of Prince's death. Overwhelmed, she managed to find a safe place to process her disbelief.
The world mourned the superstar, but Garcia dealt with an intense personal sadness. The widespread tributes, including lighting monuments in purple, were difficult yet impactful for her.
Remembering His Legacy
Reflecting on Prince's legacy, Garcia believes he would have been surprised yet humbled by the widespread admiration. Despite knowing his influence, he remained humble throughout his life.
Prince died on April 21, 2016, at age 57 from an accidental fentanyl overdose at his home in Paisley Park.
Cultural Impact and Personal Loss
Garcia started Live 4 Love Charities with Prince in 1996 to honor their late son Amiir through arts education and community healing initiatives. A Glam Slam Benefit is being held to celebrate Prince's cultural contributions with performances by notable artists.
The couple had a son who passed away shortly after birth due to a genetic disorder. Although Garcia has publicly addressed this tragedy, even writing about it in her memoir The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, it remained a private matter for Prince.
After their divorce in 2000, Garcia adopted a daughter named Gia, while Prince married Manuela Testolini in 2001 before they divorced in 2007.
