Gruesome Twist: Killer Sang 'Jingle Bell Rock' During Girl’s Murder
Trial Details Emerge
Tanner Horner pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping on April 7, before his trial began. He is accused of murdering 7-year-old Athena Strand in his FedEx truck after delivering a package to her home in Paradise, Texas, on November 30, 2022.
During the trial, audio from the truck’s security system was presented. Jurors heard "Jingle Bell Rock" playing as Horner allegedly committed the crime. The prosecution argues that Horner covered the camera lens before killing Athena.
Prosecution's Case
Jurors reportedly broke down when hearing the screams captured in the audio, alongside noises that suggested violence. Witnesses testified that Horner asked Athena to undress before she resisted him and questioned his intentions. Her body was discovered two days later in a nearby river.
The footage also showed Horner smoking a cigarette after the incident, with prosecutors claiming he lied about hitting her with the truck and strangled her to avoid arrest.
Next Steps
Horner was indicted for aggravated kidnapping and capital murder. As of April 17, the prosecution concluded its presentation, having shown graphic evidence to jurors. The defense is set to begin presenting their case on April 22.
