Trump's Bold Move Ends 165-Year US Currency Tradition

Share Post

Donald Trump plans to alter U.S. paper currency, introducing significant changes for the first time in over 165 years.

Currency Redesign

Since starting his second term in January 2025, Trump has initiated numerous policies under what he calls the "Golden Age of America." As part of celebrations for the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence on July 4, 2026, American currency will undergo a redesign this summer.

Presidential Signature

The new bills will replace the traditional U.S. treasurer’s signature with Trump's own, marking the first time a sitting president's signature appears on American currency. Treasury officials describe this change as commemorating both the nation’s milestone anniversary and strong economic leadership.

Additional Commemorative Changes

The government has also approved a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump's likeness, alongside proposals for a $1 coin bearing his image, which have been controversial. Critics raise legal concerns about depicting a living or sitting president on standard coins.

Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto oppose the $1 coin idea, citing misuse of public funds and potential political implications. These initiatives form part of broader anniversary celebrations but have sparked significant debate.
