Lupita Nyong'o Opens Up About Fibroid Battle: Surgery Dilemma Returns

Share Post

Lupita Nyong’o has been dealing with uterine fibroids for decades, and she recently revealed that the condition has worsened over time. She first underwent surgery to remove fibroids in her 20s and now faces a resurgence of symptoms.

Lupita Nyong’o's Fibroid Experience

Nyong’o was diagnosed with fibroids in her early 20s and had surgery to remove them at age 23. During the procedure, doctors removed 30 fibroids of various sizes from her uterus. Recently, she disclosed dealing with the return of these growths, now numbering 50.

Nyong’o has not yet decided between undergoing another surgical procedure or coping with ongoing symptoms such as pain and bleeding. Her options include a myomectomy or a hysterectomy, both offering different risks and benefits.

Treatment Options for Fibroids

A myomectomy can be chosen by women wanting to preserve fertility. It involves removing fibroids while keeping the uterus intact. However, there is a risk of fibroids returning since the uterus remains.

In contrast, a hysterectomy offers a permanent solution by removing the uterus, but it is generally recommended for those who do not plan to have children. Both surgeries carry risks of complications such as bleeding and infection.

The Recurrence of Fibroids

Many factors can influence why fibroids recur after being surgically removed. Common types like intramural and submucosal fibroids may particularly have high recurrence rates. Monitoring is advised for those who have had prior myomectomies.

Women experiencing heavy or prolonged menstrual cycles, pelvic pain, or lower back pain should consult with their doctor about treatment options for fibroids. Prompt discussion can help explore less invasive solutions before fibroids become more severe.
