Buffy Reboot Star Reacts to Hulu Axing the New Show
Ryan Kiera Armstrong, star of the planned remake of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has expressed her feelings after Hulu decided not to proceed with the project.
Project Cancellation Announcement
Armstrong, aged 16, took to Instagram to thank fans for their support. Though emotional, she shared that she was proud of the pilot titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, despite disappointment that fans will not see it.
The original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar announced on Instagram that Hulu opted not to continue with the reboot. The pilot had been ordered in early 2025.
Support and Acknowledgments
Armstrong expressed gratitude towards Sarah Michelle Gellar and creative team members like writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, and director Chloé Zhao. She thanked the cast for working with her and acknowledged fans who believed in her.
Gellar also extended thanks to director Chloe Zhao for revitalizing her love for the character Buffy. She assured fans that while this project won't continue, Buffy's impact remains significant.
A Significant Journey
The reboot was set to introduce Armstrong as a young slayer mentored by Buffy. Gellar had overcome prior hesitations to revisit the franchise, committing in 2025 to both star in and produce this new chapter.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series ran from 1997 to 2003 across two networks. It was based on the 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson as Buffy.
