R. Kelly Leaves Isolation After Two Weeks Over Warden Phone Link
R. Kelly has returned to the general prison population after spending two weeks in isolation at FCI Butner, where officials investigated a phone number found in his possession.
Isolation Investigation
The Special Housing Unit at the Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, North Carolina, held the singer while authorities reviewed how he obtained contact information of a retired prison official. R. Kelly's attorney, Beau Brindley, stated that the investigation revealed no misconduct on Kelly's part.
Attorney's Statement
According to Brindley, the phone number belonged to an ex-warden that Kelly met through a mentorship program and maintained contact with post-retirement. He expressed that Kelly was held without legitimate cause before being released from special housing.
Standard Procedures
Dr. DeWayne Hendrix, a former federal prison official, described such reviews as standard when inmates possess contact details of current or former staff, emphasizing that these investigations ensure security.
Kelly, 59, is serving a 30-year sentence due to convictions in New York and Illinois related to racketeering and sex crimes. His projected release is set for December 2046.
