Rene Campos Stirs Controversy Near School During Fresno Campaign Event
Rene Campos, a registered sex offender running for Fresno City Council, has held a press conference near an elementary school. This move drew criticism from the school and local leaders.
Candidacy Controversy
Campos, who is 41 and focusing his campaign on safety in Fresno's District 7, faced backlash as city leaders vowed to block his bid. He previously pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor related to possessing child sex abuse material in 2021 and served probation.
Local candidates and council members opposed his campaign and proposed legislation to prevent registered sex offenders from serving as council members.
Press Conference Near School
Campos invited media outside Saint John’s Catholic Church, near Big Picture Educational Academy, for a press event during school hours. He argued that rehabilitation and forgiveness are critical, emphasizing trust-building with Fresno residents.
"I feel the city of Fresno... you earn [forgiveness] day by day, minute by minute," Campos stated at the press conference.
School's Response
Big Picture Educational Academy condemned Campos' actions through a public statement, emphasizing student safety. The school asserted they were not affiliated with his event and are pursuing legal measures to protect students from potential harm posed by Campos' proximity.
