New Hurdle Emerges for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix Plans
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's project with Netflix is facing challenges, potentially endangering its future. The couple's media company planned to produce a film adaptation of Carley Fortune’s book, Meet Me at the Lake, but progress has stalled.
Project Development Delays
In August 2023, it was announced that Archwell Productions would create a movie based on Fortune's novel after Netflix acquired the rights for approximately $3 million. However, after three years, the project has yet to secure a director or cast, perplexing industry insiders.
A source mentioned to Page Six that a lengthy development period like this isn't favorable within Netflix. There is uncertainty about the duration of the Duke and Duchess's first-look contract with Netflix.
Other Projects with Netflix
The Sussexes have also announced plans to adapt Jasmine Guillory’s romantic novel, The Wedding Date, though this too remains in development. Concerns are mounting over their deal renewal if no progress is shown soon.
After departing from their royal duties in 2020, Harry and Meghan signed an exclusive contract with Netflix. Their documentary Harry & Meghan was successful, but Meghan's proposed lifestyle series With Love, Meghan hasn't been renewed for a third season.
Future Prospects
The couple recently offered a new documentary titled Cookie Queen to Netflix following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival. It remains without a distributor or streaming platform commitment.
