A former mayor in Louisiana has been found guilty of sexual offenses involving a teenage boy after being accused of engaging in sexual activity with her son's 16-year-old friend during a party at her home.

Trial and Conviction

Misty Roberts, the former mayor of DeRidder, was convicted by a jury in Beauregard Parish after evidence from a pool party at her home in July 2024 was presented. She was found guilty of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a minor, based on testimony from the boy and several witnesses.

The incident reportedly occurred during a party where alcohol was consumed. The boy testified he was intoxicated when the encounter happened. Witnesses described observing concerning interactions between Roberts and the teenager.

Witness Testimonies

The jury heard from various witnesses, including family members who noted inappropriate interactions between Roberts and the victim. Some testified about receiving messages instructing them to hide what they had seen.

Roberts' own children were among those who provided crucial testimony to establish the sequence leading up to the encounter. Witnesses also described Roberts as behaving erratically that night due to heavy drinking.

Legal Consequences

The jury's verdict came swiftly after deliberations, concluding that Roberts engaged in the alleged activities. Sentencing is set for April 17, where she may face up to 17 years in prison. She could also be required to register as a sex offender.

This case highlighted accountability issues due to Roberts' former position as an elected official. Following her resignation in 2024, Michael D. Harris became DeRidder's first Black mayor, marking a political transition for the city.
