Billy Idol Reveals How Smoking Crack Led Him Away from Heroin

Share Post

Billy Idol discussed his battle with addiction in a recent interview, sharing that he used smoking crack as a means to quit heroin during the 1980s.

Struggles with Addiction

The 70-year-old musician revealed on Club Random with Bill Maher how difficult it was to stop using heroin. He likened the experience to feeling like his skeleton was "trying to get out" of his body.

Idol also recounted an event from the peak of his career following his Rebel Yell album success when he overdosed by snorting heroin and needed urgent medical attention.

Unconventional Methods

In the interview, Idol explained that he chose to smoke crack instead of injecting heroin due to the influence of his mother, a nurse. He found the idea of injections unappealing and saw smoking crack as an alternative way to quit heroin.

Although this method is risky, Idol claimed it helped him overcome his heroin addiction.

A Turning Point

Recalling a 1990 motorcycle accident that nearly cost him his leg, Idol stated that incident motivated him to move away from drugs. Despite acknowledging AA's perspective, he believes he has largely left drug use behind.
