To mark America's 250th anniversary in 2026, a proposal for a new $1 coin featuring former President Donald Trump has been introduced, but Democrats are opposing it.

On July 4, 2026, the United States will celebrate 250 years since declaring independence, with significant national events planned. The U.S. Treasury had announced plans last year for a special coin honoring Trump as part of the commemoration.

The original design featured Trump's profile on one side, while the reverse sparked controversy by depicting him raising his fist in front of an American flag with the words "Fight, Fight, Fight." This image referred to a photo from a July 2024 campaign rally in Pennsylvania where Trump survived an assassination attempt.

In response to public backlash, the Treasury scrapped that design and presented three new versions to the Commission of Fine Arts.

Democratic Opposition

Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Jeff Merkley and Catherine Cortez Masto, have introduced legislation to prevent the coin's production. They argue that it misuses public funds and goes against American tradition. Merkley criticized the proposal as self-glorifying, while Cortez Masto highlighted that living presidents have never been featured on U.S. currency, which she believes contradicts democratic values.

The final decision on whether the coin will be minted lies with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
