Denmark and the United States have concluded talks in Washington with unresolved disagreements regarding Greenland's security and strategic importance. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt.

Key differences persist despite the discussions being described as frank and constructive. Denmark emphasized that Greenland’s political status and sovereignty are non-negotiable, while both sides share an interest in maintaining stability in the Arctic region.

The U.S. officials have underlined Greenland's significance due to its location and increasing global attention in the area. President Donald Trump views Greenland as crucial to U.S. national security and advocates for enhanced defense planning in the Arctic.

Denmark reiterated that Greenland is an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and any decisions about its future must involve the Greenlandic government and people. Both parties have agreed to establish a working group to facilitate ongoing dialogue while respecting Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Denmark has announced plans to bolster defense activities in Greenland and neighboring Arctic regions. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen disclosed intentions to enhance presence, training, and exercises with NATO allies. Sweden is participating in joint Arctic exercises with Denmark, and Norway has reported some cooperation related to Arctic planning and training.

European leaders have stressed that decisions about Greenland's future should be made solely by Denmark and Greenland. German Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil urged adherence to international law and emphasized that Greenland's status should not be determined externally. Denmark has confirmed that discussions with the U.S. will continue, focusing on shared security interests while upholding sovereignty.
