Mystery Courier Caught Smuggling Dangerous Virus from China to the US New

Mystery Courier Caught Smuggling Dangerous Virus from China to the US

American officers caught a person who landed in the United States carrying vials of a coronavirus from China, according to documents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies made public on July 24.U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers found the vials of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus and antibody genetic material on a courier, whose name was redacted, during an inspection at Detroit Metropolitan Airport on Nov. 28, 2018, according to the documents. The courier was not authorized to carry the vials, which had been obscured in carry-on baggage with a combination of paper towels and wax film, officials said. The courier said that he was given the vials by Yusen Zhou, who worked for China’s Academy of Military Medical Sciences, and that the vials were intended for Fang Li, a researcher at the University of Minnesota who has co-written papers with Zhou.Laboratory testing from DHS and the FBI confirmed that porcine epidemic diarrhea virus spike protein was in the vials, as well as partial immunoglobulin heavy chain precursor messenger ribonucleic acid.Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus is a highly dangerous coronavirus that causes illnesses and deaths in swine. The attempted delivery came just one month after a student in Li’s lab offered to send live porcine epidemic diarrhea virus to an American researcher, Ralph Baric, according to emails also released on Friday.Related StoriesIt also came six months after Dr. Zhengli Shi, a virologist at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, asked Li to have a student take coronavirus antibodies from the United States to China, the emails showed. Li said that plan was not a good idea “given the current tension between USA and China,” but suggested another scientist ship the antibodies to China.CBP officials said in a report dated June 15, 2020, that Li had received funding from the National Institutes of Health. They said that some of his research fellows and collaborators have connections to the Chinese military and may pose a risk to U.S. national security.“Additional investigation is necessary to determine if LI’s research, and any resulting scientific discoveries and advances, are for the benefit of the United States or for China, and if the intention of LI’s research fellows/affiliates are to act as unconventional collectors of information,” they said.Li and CBP did not return requests for comment by time of publication. In 2021, the same courier was stopped at the Detroit airport before flying to China and CBP officers found 132 undeclared vials they said likely contained a species of fly regularly used in biological research, as well as a computer issued by an unidentified research institution that belonged to another person, in addition to credentials to log onto the computer. The courier was described as a teacher at Zhengzhou University in China, and that he completed work with an U.S. facility whose name was redacted. He said he did not declare the flies because “he was not sure he [was] allowed to transport” them on the plane, the CBP documents said. The vials were seized and the courier was allowed to leave.Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who released the documents, said in a statement that he found “undeclared coronavirus materials moving between American and Chinese labs as far back as 2018—years before anyone had heard of COVID-19.”Federal prosecutors in 2024 and 2025 charged other Chinese nationals over trying to smuggle viruses into the United States. Some of them, such as Youhuang, who was a post-doctoral researcher at Indiana University, have pleaded guilty and were sentenced to time in prison.

BretMichaels/FacebookThe rockstar (seen here performing for a crowd) told his followers on Wednesday that he was admitted to the hospital when the stone “would not pass” after a week of waiting. BretMichaels/Facebook“The pain became intense but, as usual, I played through Charleston [West Virginia], Grantville, [Pennsylvania], and a special private show at Fairchild AFB in Spokane for veterans, active duty and their families,” he wrote, adding that he was hospitalized “immediately, the next day” after his Spokane appearance. “The operation has been done and is complete & I’m out of post-op recovery, and I’m doing everything within my power to feel better and continue playing great shows for great fans when I’ve got a complete clean bill of health.” Michaels then expanded on his earlier “WisdomWednesday” lesson, noting that he’s “wise enough to know how important family, friends, fans, doctors and nurses play such a vital role in our everyday health.”The “pain became intense,” but Michaels (pictured above at the 2023 Super Bowl) still pushed himself through three performances in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and in Spokane. The slate of performances is scheduled to run through September. Michaels was also previously scheduled to take part in the President Trump-affiliated Freedom 250 Presents: The Great American State Fair concert series, which ran from June 25 to July 10. However on May 28, he canceled his performance — along with several other announced acts — citing concerns regarding safety and that the show had “evolved into something much more divisive” than what he signed up for. After the procedure, Michaels (seen above performing at Round Two of the 2026 NFL Draft at Acrisure Stadium) told his fans he’s “doing everything within my power to feel better and continue playing great shows.” Getty ImagesThe musician (pictured here at a press conference with Mötley Crue, Def Leppard, and Poison in 2019) is scheduled to perform next on July 31 in Belleville, Illinois. Getty Images“When this opportunity was originally presented to my team, it was described as a celebration of our country through music and a chance to honor our veterans, active military, first responders, teachers and hardworking Americans from all walks of life,” Michaels wrote.“As the son of a veteran, and coming from a family that has proudly served, that is something I have always been honored to support.”“Unfortunately, what was presented to us as a celebration of our country has evolved into something much more divisive than what I agreed to be a part of,” he continued. “Concerns have also been raised regarding the safety of my fans, band, crew, family and myself, including threats that are completely unfounded and unforgivable.” Community GuidelinesWelcome to the Page Six Community! Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations. Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Vandalism Shocks with Unexpected Culprit New

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Vandalism Shocks with Unexpected Culprit

A progression of the renovations on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on (Top L–R) May 2, May 28, June 7, (Bottom L–R) June 12, June 16, and June 18, 2026. The pool was drained, cleaned, sealed, waterproofed, and painted blue ahead of the 250th anniversary of American independence. ReutersThe newly restored Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington will be partially drained this week after being vandalized, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said on July 5.“We may be able to partially drain it and do the repair. To be able to fix it, we may not have to drain the whole thing,” Burgum said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.Vandals are accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages after allegedly using box cutters to make up to 350 feet of gashes in the recently installed industrial liner of the pool.Burgum said authorities have video and eyewitness accounts of the alleged crimes and the fate of the suspects is up the courts now.“Even though there was damage done by vandals that was there, it is a small, small [and] 99.99 percent of the pool bottom is perfect,” Burgum added. The secretary did not reveal how much fixing the pool’s latest vandalism will cost but referred to the latest renovation, which cost $14.7 million, as a “big success.”Related StoriesThe iconic pool is nearly 2,030 feet long, 167 feet wide, and can be as deep as 30 inches at its center.Burgum confirmed that the massive landmark is no longer leaking 45,000 gallons of water per day.“It’s fixed in the sense that [it’s] not leaking 45,000 gallons a day, and we’ve got, you know, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of that industrial liner that’s been damaged, and that’s the only thing that remains to go back and fix the damage done by the vandals, and then we’re going to be back in business again.”He also denied that paint was peeling off the pool, saying it was actually part of an industrial liner that was vandalized.A view of the newly resurfaced Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington, on June 12, 2026. Anne Lebreton/AFP via Getty Images“This is like a strong material, and it’s the size of eight football fields, and the only way you can end up with actual slices in one spot, and the other is that someone physically cut it,” Burgum added.Seven people have been arrested in the vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, according to Burgum on Sunday. One of the suspects included former U.S. Olympic canoe racer David Hearn, 67, who allegedly pulled up and tore the protective liner at the bottom of the Reflecting Pool, per U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.Hearn, who previously owned a company that manufactured materials for vessels, denied that he intentionally tried to damage the pool, telling The Associated Press that he reached into the water to inspect a section after he saw that the coating was already peeling.President Trump separately alleged that people poured “corrosive and destructive chemicals” into the water, which may cause it to be drained. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on June 26, 2026. Madalina Kilroy/The Epoch TimesThe algae issue was fixed with “nano bubblers,” a device that caused microscopic gas bubbles to fix the issue without the need for harsh chemicals, according to Burgum, who confirmed that the organism briefly reappeared after the renovation because there was algae in the pipes as the pool was being refilled.“If you go down there today and look at it, it is completely clean and clear, and so, for the first time, there’s [an] actual solution that involves making sure that we’ve got an algae-free pond,” Burgum said in a separate interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday.Jackson Richman contributed to this report.
