ReutersThe newly restored Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington will be partially drained this week after being vandalized, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said on July 5.“We may be able to partially drain it and do the repair. To be able to fix it, we may not have to drain the whole thing,” Burgum said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.Vandals are accused of causing thousands of dollars in damages after allegedly using box cutters to make up to 350 feet of gashes in the recently installed industrial liner of the pool.Burgum said authorities have video and eyewitness accounts of the alleged crimes and the fate of the suspects is up the courts now.“Even though there was damage done by vandals that was there, it is a small, small [and] 99.99 percent of the pool bottom is perfect,” Burgum added.The secretary did not reveal how much fixing the pool’s latest vandalism will cost but referred to the latest renovation, which cost $14.7 million, as a “big success.”Related StoriesThe iconic pool is nearly 2,030 feet long, 167 feet wide, and can be as deep as 30 inches at its center.Burgum confirmed that the massive landmark is no longer leaking 45,000 gallons of water per day.“It’s fixed in the sense that [it’s] not leaking 45,000 gallons a day, and we’ve got, you know, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of that industrial liner that’s been damaged, and that’s the only thing that remains to go back and fix the damage done by the vandals, and then we’re going to be back in business again.”He also denied that paint was peeling off the pool, saying it was actually part of an industrial liner that was vandalized.A view of the newly resurfaced Reflecting Pool on the National Mall in Washington, on June 12, 2026. Mauro me dijo que quería que lo cremaran. Every father hopes for a better life for their children, but no parent foresees their child living in a warzone. Akram Qasem, a Palestinian father of eight, is living amid an array of makeshift tents with his wife, children and relatives. One tent houses 12 of them as dirty water flows through the Gaza encampments, exposing all living there to unsanitary conditions.With Gaza cut off from the outside world, there are very few ways of earning the money necessary to provide food and shelter.Abu and his 3-year-old daughter Waad.ABC NewsAkram told ABC News he is struggling to provide for his family. On top of the barriers to finding work, he needed to have his arm amputated after an injury due to an Israeli airstrike."After the announced ceasefire, life did not improve," Akram told ABC News. "This is the fate God wrote for me. I have become disabled. There is no income."The Gaza Strip has been largely destroyed by Israeli offensives since the war began after Hamas' surprise terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.Since the U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas passed in October 2025, the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry said Israeli attacks throughout Gaza have killed over 1,000 people."Hamas continues to violate the terms of the U.S. ceasefire," a spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement to ABC News. "In accordance with the U.S. ceasefire, the IDF has the right to defend against these threats. The IDF targets terrorists and not civilians and takes precautionary measures before strikes."On Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike on a family house in the Sabra neighbourhood killed a father, his wife and their four children, Reuters reported. The IDF confirmed the strike, claiming they were targeting a Hamas militant. Medical facilities have also become targets, Dr. Nour Sharaf, who flew from Texas to volunteer at Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital, told ABC News."Hospitals are supposed to be safe spaces," she said. "They're supposed to be somewhere where people go for healing." Working at the hospital after the U.S.-backed ceasefire passed, she told ABC News it has not made a difference for people locally, calling it "a political agenda."Al-Shifa is the largest medical complex in Gaza and has come under attack several times during the war, killing people inside the hospital. After each attack, Israel claimed they were targeting Hamas. Instead, Waad runs out each day, with a pot the size of her head, in an attempt to get food. Their family is among an estimated 1.4 million in Gaza who rely on food handouts -- 67% of its population -- according to the U.N.-run World Food Programme.Each member of the Qasem family goes to different sites each day to increase their chances of getting food, they told ABC News. With an injured nose and only a few feet tall, Waad faces hungry crowds, and on the day ABC News was there, she did not get food until a producer intervened and a worker filled her pot out of compassion."Give us passports, give us a way out. We are not living. Let us live even half the life that people outside of Gaza are living," Akram told ABC News. "We are buried alive. Buried here in the Gaza Strip." Despite the destruction, he expressed hope that life for his children will one day return to normal, that they will be able to have a home and attend school, and not just run to get food as a means to survive amid war.
